The Difference Between Marine Degradable And Compostable Products
Jurjen Sjouerman

All across the globe, we’re united by a growing awareness of the need to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainability. One way in which this has manifested is through the development of products that are more environmentally friendly, such as marine degradable and compostable products, many of which CapeCup holds under the BioAfrica banner. While these terms may seem similar, they refer to distinct properties that have important implications for the environment. In this blog post, we will explore the difference between marine degradable and compostable products.

While these terms may seem similar, they refer to distinct properties that have important implications for the environment. In this blog post, we will explore the difference between marine degradable and compostable products.

Marine Degradable Products

Marine degradable products are designed to break down in the ocean. These products are made from materials that are biodegradable, which means that they can be broken down by microorganisms into natural compounds like water, carbon dioxide, and biomass. The idea behind marine degradable products is that they will not contribute to marine pollution if they end up in the ocean.

At CapeCup, it’s our goal to give our customers the option to help keep plastics out of the oceans and the landfill.

Compostable Products

Compostable products, on the other hand, are designed to break down completely in a composting environment. Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic materials into nutrient-rich soil. Compostable products are made from materials that are biodegradable and can be broken down by microorganisms into natural compounds that are beneficial to soil health.

Compostable products are a more sustainable solution than marine degradable products because they are designed to break down and enrich the soil, instead of contributing to landfills. However, it is important to note that not all compostable products are created equal. Some compostable products may require specific conditions to break down properly, such as a certain temperature.
